Loft Conversions

What is a Loft conversion?

Lofts can be anything in a house. Either they can be an upper storey building directly under the roof or they can be a loft apartment which has a large adaptable open space either created or converted for residential use. Loft conversion is a common practice in London.

Attic Conversions vs Loft Conversions

In private houses a loft is an upper room or a storey in a building, mainly in a barn, directly under the roof, used either for storage or for specific purposes. Because of this it’s roughly similar to an attic. The major differentiation of an attic and a loft is, the former constitutes an entire floor of the building and the latter covers only a few rooms with one or more side openings to the lower floors.

LOFT APARTMENT

Loft apartments are built from earlier industrial buildings. Earlier when industrial developments were constructed in place of apartments they were called as loft condominiums. Lofts simply refer to the development of street level business and the loft apartments are placed below. Loft apartments are one of the components of urban renewal which are also used in the remaking of industrial buildings like art galleries, studio spaces and arts districts. The best example for Loft Communities is the Manhattan’s Meatpacking district which is an adoption of the adaptive reuse ordinance held in the city of Los Angeles which was earlier called as the Arts District. So real estate developers are showing a big interest in these kinds of places as they can create a readymade loft in urban areas itself. While other developers create a unit during the renovation of old buildings and a number of them are included in the floor plans of brand new developments. Loft industries can be categorised into two, Hard Lofts and Soft Lofts.

Hard Lofts are the former industrial buildings converted to residential or for live work use.

Soft Lofts are loft styled residential buildings which are built entirely new.
