Neighbours and
councils

We are not going to pretend that your plans don't need to involve other people - like your neighbours and the council planning department. That's why clear advice on legal and planning aspects of your project as part of the service.

Perhaps the most important thing you might like to know is that, unless there are exceptional circumstances, you can do virtually anything you like in the triangular spaces up to the ridge of the roof. And that could mean virtually a new top floor the size of your entire ground plan - maybe half as much space again.

It is hard to think of any way that developing this space could bother your neighbours, and we can't think of a situation where it ever has.

One subject where they may have something legitimate to say, however, is when it comes to shared parts of the building like a party wall.

Our picture to the right is from a government booklet on the subject which you may like to download by clicking here, though again you will find things are usually straightforward.

The council shouldn't be too much trouble either and it's probably obvious from other properties in your street what is acceptable and you'll find that most neighbours are reasonable. After all, they could very easily want your co-operation one day.

A loft extension is exciting for you, but it is an every day occurrence throughout central London and most people around you will barely notice.
