Planning and Preparation
As you know our planning and preparation is meticulous, encompassing the following:
- If your house was built before 2000, there’s a chance it could contain asbestos. To check for this, we’ll complete an asbestos survey which will show if it needs to be removed by a licensed contractor before our work starts.
- We check where electricity supplies enter the property and turn these off before working on or near any existing cables.
- We make sure all structural alterations and propping systems are accurately planned and installed properly.
- We ensure only Gas Safe Registered engineers remove or alter a flue, or install a disconnected gas appliance.
- Generally, the existing timbers in your roof won’t be strong enough to support the new floor, so new timber work and, most often, steelwork will need to be installed as the span is normally too much for existing timber beams. We make sure any changes to your roof are built correctly so they don’t affect the structure of your roof.
Working at height carries significant risks to every party involved, so we take the following precautions:
- We use scaffolding that has guardrails, midrails and toeboards as well as brick guards if necessary to stop any people or equipment falling from the edges of the worksite.
- We install floor boarding when the work starts, to prevent falls between joists or through ceilings.
- We make sure ladders are tied and secure and may install stairs to the loft as early as possible for safe entrance and exit.
Working at height
We will be working on your conversion for a considerable amount of time, so we have a few ‘housekeeping’ practices we have in place to make sure your whole home is safe while we complete your conversion:
- We keep walkways, work areas and stairs clear and free from obstructions such as rubbish, materials or trailing cables.
- We place skips where they can be easily filled and collected safely.
- We do not throw things from the scaffold or loft, we use a chute to the skip for maximum health and safety.
- We explain in detail to everyone on site the importance of keeping their work area clean and we enforce this regularly.
- We store timber flat rather than upright and ensure pallets used to stack materials are in great condition, not leaning and on firm ground.
Ensuring your loft conversion is properly insulated will keep the loft room cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’ll not only reduce your CO2 output but it’ll save you a lot of money by keeping your heating bills low. Most loft conversions use modern high performance thermal insulation boards. To conserve energy in your loft we try maintain a U-value energy level where possible.
